Patrick J. Morrissey has nearly 50 years of experience in the construction industry, with a focus on technical representation, material consultation, and rehabilitation projects. For the past 18 years, he has specialized in masonry stabilization and strengthening, with an emphasis on preservation.
A 1967 Civil Engineering graduate of Manhattan College, Morrissey pursued postgraduate studies in concrete and construction management at Newark College of Engineering. He founded ConSpec Associates, Inc. in 1976, a firm committed to providing innovative, cost-effective repair solutions for the built environment. Over the years, he has introduced numerous products and processes for structural strengthening and preservation.
Morrissey has been actively involved in various industry organizations, including ICRI and the Association for Preservation Technology (APT). He was named a Fellow of ICRI in 2013 and has served in leadership roles on committees for ICRI, ASTM, and The Masonry Society. His recent projects include introducing advanced materials like Cement-Based Carbon Fiber and CastCotta, a cement-based material designed to replicate terracotta. Morrissey also founded the LinkedIn group ‘Means, Methods and Materials for Restoration of the Built Environment,’ with over 5,000 members from 60 countries.
Currently, he is working on ArchEvo, a platform for intellectual property transfer in the repair and restoration industry, and has helped establish the first Master’s program in Preservation Engineering at Manhattan College.
What do you find to be the most valuable benefit(s) of ICRI membership?
The ability to obtain knowledge and intellectual property transfer in real time. As a national organization, ICRI has allowed my firm to be on a first name basis with the best in our business across the United States. Being able to introduce new and proven means, methods, and materials in such a focused group in our area of expertise is invaluable. Also, there’s the camraderie—being able to see a friendly face almost anywhere I travel is comforting. Establishing new and reinforcing existing relationships is what ICRI is all about. If you stop…you stagnate.
Your company, ConSpec Associates, Inc., has developed an “Ask ConSpec” area on your website to allow restoration contractors and specifiers to submit questions. Please tell us more about this collaborative tool and how it can be useful to professionals in the concrete and masonry industry.
Ask ConSpec will be an anonymous “One to Many” with a “Few to One” response online program, for Owners, Engineers, Contractors, and Public Agencies, maintaining anonymity until such time as the initiator want to establish a relationship for a particular discussion/solution, which eliminate painful unwanted follow-up to public venues like LinkedIn. [Visit www.conspec-rep.com/ask-conspec to submit your questions!]
What do you want to see in the future for ICRI?
Continued but expanded open transfer of intellectual property on all things for concrete and masonry repair and restoration, with a public area similar but open [like the Ask ConSpec concept].
How do you define success?
Gaining respect in your industry. Also, being recognized as an ICRI Fellow.
Name a few of your most enjoyable or memorable projects you’ve worked on in your career.
I worked on an anchoring solution in Angkor Wat for the World Monuments fund. Also, I have done projects at the White House, the Empire State Building, Falling Water and numerous landmark lighthouses.
What are some quotes or words you live by?
“If you say it can’t be done, all that means is you can’t do it, it doesn’t mean I can’t do it.”
“I taught you everything you know, I didn’t teach you everything I know!”
