This presentation explores the primary causes of concrete scaling and provides practical strategies to prevent its occurrence. Attendees will learn about the detrimental effects of freeze-thaw cycles, deicing chemicals, and how finishing techniques affect concrete surfaces. The discussion will delve into the importance of mix design, air entrainment, and curing methods in enhancing concrete durability and resistance to scaling. Additionally, the presentation will briefly cover effective preventive measures to safeguard concrete structures from the damaging effects of scaling. By understanding the underlying causes and implementing preventive strategies, construction professionals, engineers, and property owners can ensure the long-term integrity and aesthetic appeal of concrete structures.

Presenter Bio
Joni Jones is a Director of Concrete Science at Braun Intertec’s Chicago Laboratory where she brings extensive experience in project and laboratory management, along with a strong background in consulting for construction materials testing. Her expertise lies in efficiently managing multiple projects across various construction and materials markets. Joni leads a team that collaborates closely with forensic engineers and architects. The team’s mission is to assist in conducting comprehensive condition surveys for existing structures. Her team’s support through laboratory testing and consulting play a crucial role in decision-making and design processes for projects before construction or for concrete repair and restoration projects. Joni is also very active with the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Illinois Ready Mix Concrete Association, National Ready Mix Concrete Association, and Society of Women in Engineering.
